Abstract

The political geography of the countries around Iran have always had an important impact on the national security of the Islamic Republic. During different periods, many alliances and military pacts have been formed in the geographical spaces around Iran. The importance of Iran in terms of geopolitics has caused any type of military-security agreement to affect Iran's relations with other countries. One of the important international treaties that has been formed in the geographical environment of Iran in the last 60 years is the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO). It was expected that with the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, the NATO organization would weaken and eventually be abandoned. But with the efforts of the United States, not only this did not happen, but the field of NATO missions and its scope of influence has expanded.
Changing NATO's past missions and creating territorial and geographical scope to play a greater role in the North Atlantic Treaty, the response of the US government has been to keep NATO in the path of the future plans of the United States at the global level, especially in the Caucasus region and Southeast Asia. NATO's goals in the current situation can be found in categories such as weakening Russia's power and eliminating the grounds for rebuilding its past authority, establishing American hegemony and superiority in Russia's sphere of influence, as well as dominating energy resources. Based on this, Europe and America are pursuing four new areas as NATO's tasks: NATO's new goals to expand towards the political geography of the eastern and southern regions have provoked the reaction of other governments such as Russia, China and Iran. The extensive presence of NATO in the geographical space of countries such as Afghanistan, as well as the beginning of some cooperation negotiations between NATO and the countries of the southern Persian Gulf in early 2017, is an undeniable fact. This situation can create different scenarios in the field of security of the geography around Iran, the certainty of which will be the "danger and threat" of the presence of NATO for the Islamic Republic of Iran. Therefore, the Islamic Republic of Iran should be sensitive enough to the new objectives of this military agreement and monitor its plans and plans.
In this article, while examining the formation process of NATO, the impact of its development and expansion to the geographical areas around Iran's borders, as well as its effects on the country's national security, are examined and evaluated.
