The Caspian region: the arena of competition between regional and extra-regional powers

Abstract

The Caspian Sea as the largest landlocked sea due to its diverse ecosystem and significant oil and gas resources, as well as its strategic and geo-economic location, with the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991, has attracted the attention of major extra-regional powers, especially the United States and the European Union on the one hand, and China , Turkey and Israel on the other hand, was placed. Russia, as the main heir of the collapsed Soviet Union, and Iran, which until the collapse of the former Soviet Union, considered themselves the sole owners of this important water zone, have pursued their interests and goals in the Caspian Basin with special sensitivity in the new conditions. The reality of the new competition in the region has created complex and diverse equations in the field of international relations, which have been investigated in this research.
